Michael from Hebo Oregon submitted the following question to us, what is a cheesecloth? As many of you have probably noticed, many of our watermelon rind based recipes require a cheesecloth. A cheesecloth is a small satchel that is often used for bundling spices and herbs within a soup or general boil vessel. What's great about a cheesecloth, is you can fill it with whatever herbs or spices you need, and then boil it without allowing these herbs and spices to enter whatever it is you are boiling. A cheesecloth is porous enough to only allow the flavor of spices or herbs to exit, while keeping larger debris inside the bag. You can buy a different variety of cheesecloths, some having a tighter weave than others, which obviously regulates how porous they will be. Using one is simple, you add in whatever you want to boil or cook, tie it off, then place it into the boiling pot.
